Future for Nature Foundation

The goal of the Future for Nature Foundation is to protect species of wild animals and plants. In pursuit of this goal, the Foundation has established the Future for Nature Award. The prize rewards and funds individuals for their internationally outstanding species protection efforts.

The Future for Nature Awards will be awarded annually during the Future for Nature Conference at Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands. A conservation master class and a sponsor market for species protection will accompany the annual conference.

New name; Future for Nature

Our oganisation has changed its name into the Future for Nature foundation. The Award is renamed accordingly into Future for Nature Award. The prize will continue under the name “Future for Nature Award”. The reason being that many people associated the former Golden Ark Award with the Golden Ark decoration initiative by late His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard and a “end of career” prize. The name Future for Nature more distinctly and unambiguously expresses our purpose: an award for talented, internationally outstanding nature conservationists making the difference for nature.. The Foundation considers the prize as a twofold investment: in young nature conservationists and in the future of nature. In order to avoid confusion, we have systematically used the new names, also in former news items.

In Memoriam Dr. Nico van Strien

Dr. Nico van Strien died on 7 February 2008. Nico was Board Member of the Future for Nature Foundation until he became the first Chairman of the International Selection Committee of the Future for Nature Award.

With Nico we lost one of the most striking personalities in our nature conservationists network. Nico was a prominent protagonist of tropical nature in Asia. He spent a lifetime and was a champion of the protection of the Asian Rhinos. His knowledge about the ecology and behaviour of the Asian Rhino was unequalled.

We miss his passionate pursuit to save the Rhino. We need heroes like Nico. Through the Future for Nature Award initiative we hope to stimulate nature conservationists to work in his spirit.
